During my open period at school, I called Best Buy. They said my camera was ready for me! So today after school I went and picked up my camera. Brand new lens; it is the same as before, but a ultrasonic. Super quiet! I almost don’t think it is taking a photograph it is so quiet. Brand new sensor too! But best of all my baby is back. That means the color in my world has returned. Well, somewhat! I got a few things I gotta fix until I am 90% happy.

Mother in the mirror

One spring (1991) soon after my mother died I wanted to reflect on motherhood and was looking for a picture of her. There were no good photos from latter years.

(NOTE: We always think of photographing children with their charm and vitality; if your parents are still around, be sure to get a great photo of them to enjoy after they’re gone!)

Eventually I found this in a book of studio photos taken of me, but here in the reflection, thanks to a creative photographer, is my mother. I wasn’t yet sitting up on my own and – cleverly disguised by the pillow – she was supporting me. You can see where the photographer has touched up the picture on the right hand side to take her out of the frame.

This scene speaks to me about our relationship with God. We look at ourselves, intent on how we are, what we look like, how we are doing. All the while this loving God is invisibly at our shoulder, gazing on us, and desiring – like a loving parent – that we will heed all wisdom we are offered and choose the best path.
